Are we there yet?

Winter is fiiiiiiiiiinally over *crossfingers*
I'm really excited for the Spring/Summer!  I love how its still LIGHT outside when I get off work these days.

Cherry Blossom!

Moarrr cherry blossom! so pretty yah!?

These past couple of months, I've been busy getting fat and working, mostly getting fat.  Seattle really has some delicious food to offer and its hard to turn it down given the opportunity.

Pork Burger at "Facing East" in Bellevue
Famous Paseo sandwich, featured on Travel Channel!

sushi overload at Jsushi

Wesley's wasabi pineapple pizza o_O at World Pizza
There has been some changes around work, taking on more projects, doing a lot of recruiting and interviews.  I've been offered to take on a new role of doing process analysis work within my department, which is an exciting new opportunity for me.  Its basically a role where I get to draw maps and ask people questions until their brains explode, totally me. yah. we'll see!

Back in Feb, wesley bought me couple of tickets to go see shows as Valentines gift.  One of which was the Beauty and the Beast.  I was so ecstatic!! I saw the Aladdin last year which was ballllllz deep amazing so I knew this one was going to be good too.  The Beauty and the Beast played at the Paramount theater, which has beautiful interior, perfect for romantic evening out with my bubbly butt:
fantabulous chandelier

This past week and next week is Seattle's bi-annual, "Restaurant Week," where participating restaurants (many of them fine dining restaurants) will offer 3 course meal for a fixed price ($15 for lunch, $28 for dinner).  My coworkers and I chose Columbia Tower Club for lunch one day, which is normally only open to club members and is located at the very top floor of the tallest building in PNW.   The view and the food, was amazing!
Facing West
Facing North
Pan Fried chicken with lemon caper sauce, the sauce on this chicken was so good!

Also part of the restaurant week, Wesley and I went to a fusion restaurant called "Poppy" on Capitol Hill.  I've been wanting to go to this place for a while so I thought the Restaurant Week was a good excuse for us to go! OMFG the restaurant was AMAZING!!  They serve their meals like Indian thali style with tiny little plates of food served on a big round tray.  From what I know, their menu changes every season.  I had the most amazing roasted duck, scallop, and banana cake ice cream!!!!  happy belly happy belly.  There is 1 more week left so I wanna try check out more restaurants next week :D

Fall Recap

UPDATE 1: Fall. The autumn leaves are so pretty in the PNW (for those unfamiliar with the acronym, it stands for Pacific Northwest)--Nature mesmerizes the Seattlites to lube us up for the harsh winter.

Fall foliage colors are soo HD.  Like you know those HD dvds you can play to view how sharp your HDTV can display colors?  EXCEPT you are actually THERE, in REAL LIFE.  No technology can ever replace beauty that the mother Earth will offer.  None.

That said, my camera sucks.  I need a new one!!! Can someone recommend me a decent, affordable point and shoot digital camera?  preferably Canon?  DSLR is too expensive, but I dunno I seem to be buying a new camera every year, maybe its time I invest in a nice camera?

Drive around Greenlake
Coloring leaves in the International District
red maple leaves over I-5.  I was in moving car, so really blurry pic.

UPDATE 2: Couple of weeks ago, my work hosted this appreciation Happy Hour with free booze and hors d'oeuvres.  My manager, who has worked there for 10+ years, said this never happened before.  *~I'm feelin' lucky~* We all got pretty tipsy and it was very difficult to work the next day.  But who can say no to free beer?  Not I.
The event was held at a former fine dining Italian restaurant downstairs of our building.
pimpness.
and there were cupcakes.  I don't know why but this was the only picture of food I took that night.

UPDATE 3:  I was invited to join the "Yelp Elite squad."  Almost exactly a year ago, I decided to create an account with Yelp to write reviews.  I've frequently visited the site over the last few years and have often felt frustrated how inaccurate some of the reviews are, so I decided to contribute instead of complaining.  I couldn't really dedicate a whole lot of time into it.  To be honest I think I've been writing pretty sloppy reviews.  But I gained decent ratings on my reviews over time and a couple of weeks ago the Yelp community manager in Seattle contacted me extending an invitation to join the Elite crew.  Score!!

Apparently once you join, Elites are invited to parties at popular restaurants/bars around town and are provided free food and booze.  Again, who can say no to free booze? Not I.

My first elite event was at Japonessa, an uber popular fusion sushi restaurant in town.  I was surprised by such a huge turn out, the restaurant was packed full of people.  I took Wesley with me and we met some interesting people and had some great appetizers and great drinks.  It was great opportunity to network and socialize with new crowd of people.

The theme was "P" party so we picked up some old cameras from Goodwill and did "Paparazzi"

UPDATE 4: I got myself a crockpot.  Its getting cold here and I'm just ALWAYS craving hot foods.  Especially, PHO.  My pho obsession has risen to such severity that I was beginning to eat pho TWICE A DAY, beef pho by day, veggie pho by night.  So I figured, what if I make my own pho so I don't have to spend as much money!!?!?!?!
I saw a recipe online that uses crockpot to make pho broth.  I thought cooking pho in crockpot was brilliant because I just don't have time to sit around the house all day babysit the simmering broth.  so I REALLY wanted to give it a try.  3 Youtube videos, 5 different pho recipes, and 2 trips to the Asian market later,  I acquired all the knowledge and power to conquer my pho quest.  All that was left was to dump the ingredients into the crockpot and I was done.  I put everything together and simmered the broth in crockpot for like 12+ hours.  I came home from work that day and I could smell something funky in the hallway of our floor.  I opened the door to my house, and this pungent rotten carcass smell just filled up the whole place.  I panicked and went to the crockpot, I opened the lid to taste the broth.  I almost puked because there was a 2 inch layer of fat and oil that accumulated to the top.  UGH.

But I didn't want to give up my hard work.  I proceeded to strain all the extra bones and fat/oil out of the broth and poured it into garbage.  Then open all the windows and doors to the house, febreeze the crap out my place.  After that was done, I tasted the broth and it tasted more like regular broth, except it was really bland.  so I added some salt/fish sauce.  taste, still bland.  more salt... still bland.... ok more salt/fish sauce??? STILL BLAND.  OK IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY TONGUE? THIS SHIT NEEDS MORE SALT.

In the end I added what seemed like a bucket of salt,  and finally I felt it was complete.
I served the below to my boy, he said it was delicious.  But I...could not eat any more than half a bowl.
In the end, I think this experience ruined my obsession with pho, just knowing what the fuck goes into making this damn soup.   Its as if I witnessed a man making the soup out of sweat of his arm pit.  I'm traumatized how gross the beef bones become when they simmer for long time, how much salt need to be added, and the fack load of fat I had to remove before using the broth.  Why didn't any of the recipe tell me that??

Anyway, I want to believe however, that my crockpot is racist and can't make Asian food right.  I did make pot roast the other day which turned out fantastic, and required less than half the effort I put into making pho.  The meat was super tender and all the veggies soaked up the flavor so well.  Mmmm...

I'll just stick with American recipes from now on and hopefully I'll be able to recover from my trauma soon because pho on a cold winter day is so perfect!

ok all the updates for now.

Pike Place Market

At any US urban metropolis you may find foods from the far east to the Mediterranean.  Same goes for Seattle and it comes with a bit of interesting history.  Thanks to the Klondike Gold Rush Museum, I learned that one of the reasons Seattle became the largest city in the northwest was the gold rush, when the city became kind like a one stop shop for gold miners to obtain goods for their journey up north.  People all over US, some out of the country, were crossing through the town.  Growing business meant that the city also saw the chance to offer a variety of different types of food to meet the demands of the travelers and the passerby alike.  Pike Place Market is an excellent example of where one can experience this culinary diversity in this city.
I love the Pike Place Market.  I always thought of it as a place where you find seafood but its more like a conglomerate of various international foods.  Up until recently I've been calling it Pike's place!! oopz. lulz  I've been living in Seattle for 3 years but I still haven't tried all of the little food places in the market.  So far, my  favorites are:
  • Piroshky Piroshky- salmon piroshky is orgasmic
  • Uli's Famous Sausage - i love em big juicy sausage mmm
  • Pasta Bar - ok its like a food court place but seriously, REALLY awesome pasta
  • Beecher's Cheese - macaroni and cheese here is dangerously amazing.
borscht at Cafe Yarmarka, a russian food court place. My roommate/bff from college is Russian, her mom cooked really good borscht.  This place isn't really comparable to their homestyle cooking, but still god really good taste.

Uli's sausage serves Bavarian + American sausage.  personally, i like the cajun style ones better.

So a couple weeks back, I went to the Cheese festival at the martket.  There were over 200 different types of cheese you can sample and buy plus seminars and cooking demonstrations.  I love cheese, I mean my name is made of cheese.  I sampled a LOT at the event. By the end everything tasted the same ( *´Д`) But! there were a couple of different types that stood out in my mind.  One was this super stinky 9 year old cheese; my sample was the size of a tiny booger but boy it was pungent, my mouth tasted like all my teeth rotted.(´ж`;)  Another one was the one we ended up buying.  It was "smoked" cheese made locally and it kind of had a smoked meat kind of smell to it when you bite down.  mMMm

We were real cheesed out at the end, but it was a fun event.  below are more pix, you can see they had vendors lined up serving free samples.
Grilled Cheeeese made with artichoke cream cheese and some kind of white cheddar.
My first meal after I went to the gym... MMMMm.

    Tulip Festival

My friend Steph took me on a day trip to Woodburn Oregon's Tulip Festival + Portland this past weekend :D

It was.. my first time *blush*

The place was filled with ACRES of tulips of all different kinds.  It was incredible!
The weather was actually really nice in the upper 60's/low 70's, a little overcast.

After 4.5 hour drive from Seattle, when we arrived and this man fed us Bratwurst..

'TWAZ DELISH.  I F'n LOVE sauerkraut and he loaded it up MMM <3

Bratwurst then gave me super powers.

I could talk to animals. I made a new friend.

then I rejoiced in the field of flowers like you do.

and then I hid, because all the terrorists are doing it.

and then I fell in love with Steph's dslr.

and then I took an AWESOME pic of steph, I mean look at this, its perfect.  can someone give me like $1000 so I can continue this effort in producing pretty photos?  kthx

    The End :D

    Oinarisaturday

    Made sum inarizushi today.

A pack of 6 inari cost $6 at Uwajimaya.  Instead, I bought a frozen abura-age pack for $1.50 a pack (came with enough to make 8 pieces).

    Recipe Link
It was really simple.  Mine came out tasting exactly like the store bought ones, which was EXACTLY what I was craving. \(。◕‿◕。)/ *yay*

Next time I think I'll stuff it with some mixed rice with beans and hijiki.

    chirashizushi

I've been craving ikura/chirashi and girls day happened to be around the corner, so I decided to give it a try. I simmered shiitake, carrots, hijiki and bamboo shoots in konbu/katsuodashi, a dash of shoyu, and mirin which later I mixed with sushi rice.  I used 2 eggs beaten with 1 table spoon of sugar, cooked it low heat with oil, front and back then cut in thin strips. thats pretty much the base of it.  I bought the ikura and shrimp sashimi at the store, but I think you can pretty much put any kind of sashimi if you want. I think traditionally for hinamatsuri, people put a layer of denbu (sweet pink flakes) but I hate that stuff so I didn't buy it.

For the cucumber flower, the trick is to keep the slices REAL thin otherwise it won't stay in tact.  you cut thin cucumber slices, put salt and squeeze away the moisture. place the slices vertically away from you and begin rolling up. heres a video I found.

it turned out pretty damn good.  *pat on shoulder*
I put reject cucumber slices around the dish so not to waste them lol.

    tada~ ( ^_^ )

so I did my career fair thing last week, which was a lot of fun, but exhausting! I talked for about 4 hours non stop and had at least 3-4 people crowding around my booth at any given time.  So I wish I could've taken a pic of my bustlin' business woman outfit but unfortunately I just didn't get a break!!
I was surprised that the majority of the questions I received had to do with school.  Like "What classes do I need to take to get a job from you guys?" or "I've got a 4.0 gpa and on honor's list, where can you guys place me?" *facepalm* my advice, if you need a job, get yourself a good attitude; if you want to learn some more, then stay in school! like... shouldn't education be about acquiring new knowledge for your own benefit?  A lot of kids I met at the fair seem to think of education as a fast lane to a position where people grow monumental respect for them just because he/she has a list of acronyms next to their names.  Instead, I really wished that they realize education only helps one build a basic platform to step into a career, whether it is networking or that SWOT analysis you learned in class.  Businesses are hiring for PEOPLE capable of executing anthropomorphic tasks, not robots.  So we look for people who we are willing to spend 40+ hrs a week with each other, take pride in where you work and provide or exceed service expectations that end users (usually humans) look for.  get back to the basics... people! [/#blogrant]

welp speaking of professionalism, last friday night when I attended a happy hour with my coworkers.   This was a special one for Joshua who took on a new position at our seattle branch, so he won't be working in downtown anymore = (  Joshua, My other coworker Jack and I were always the last ones standing at almost every HH I've been to and we've made some really good drunken conversations in the past.  He'll be greatly missed!
     Carbomb murders.

Well.. we bid farewell with a shittonofalcohol.  I think about 30+ people gathered for the occasion then trickled down to about 6 of us, after about 4 hours of nonstop drinking.  Needless to say, it got pretty messy. I think everyone vomited at the second bar we ended up at...for me, I just straight up turned into a walking vomit vending machine, except you didn't even have to pay me or press a button.  pretty gross.  I'm pretty sure I'm officially banned from drinking in my household.  whatever, I must take pride in my japanese businessman style drinking.

Then I battled a monstrous hangover which the enemy brought with them, the Abominable Sore Throat from hours of spewing stomach acid.  When I finally gained victory (and consciousness) over such hellish combat late Sunday afternoon, I experienced hunger like that of a malnourished whale.  So it was then that we decided its time we finally head out to the holy grail of burgers: Red Mill.
BGM: "Whose your daddy" - Benny Benassi
hMMMMMm.... It was soooo goood!!!!!  This was the place that went on man vs. food seattle.  I've been wanting to go there for so long!! ahhh...

And then this week I pho'd with this really cool looking chica above.  her baRfday is coming up and I'm really exciteeed :D weeee~ xoxo
